The General Assembly of the United Nations has declared the years 2011 – 2020 as the “Decade of Action for Road Safety”, to be launched next May 11. This announcement intends to motívate all governments to set realistic goals to decrease the number of fatalities and injuries as a result of traffic accidents and to commit to undertake “concrete actions” to reach them.
In order to contribute to the success of this initiative, the UN are making available a Global Plan, a guide of actions for all social agents committed to this cause: local and national governments, non-governmental organizations and companies, called upon to work together to reach these goals.
Within this context, Luchemos por la Vida supports this proclaim and commits to continue to work strongly in Argentina so that there comes a day when not a single person dies in a traffic accident.
To this end, Luchemos will continue to promote its own iniatives and seek to engage authorities at all levels and the society as a whole, especially, regarding the four key subjects to reduce road fatalities:

  • Helmet use
  • Use of safety belt and child restraint systems
  • No drinking and driving
  • Speed control

As for the legislation area, it will promote

  • The project to modify the Penal Code incorporating crimes against traffic safety.

Immediate actions:

  • Mass campaign on radio, TV and cinemas promoting helmet use: “You have a brain… use it”. April – December 2011.
  • Seminar on Traffic Safety and Traffic Safety Education National: “Global Plan of the Decade of Action for Road Safety: Identifying problems, designing and developing effective actions”. Buenos Aires, June 23-24, 2011

During this seminar, aimed at training officials, public agents and associations, the local problems that cause most victims on our streets and higways and their solutions will be analized in light of the Global Plan proposed by the United Nations.

  • Traffic safety workshops for elementary schools, in Buenos Aires and surrounding areas, including specifically the “Decade of Action of Road Safety”. May – November, 2011
  • Distribution of brochures and leaflets.
  • Launching the book: Manual para la conducción segura. (Safe Driving Handbook)
  • Anouncement about the Decade on the web page  http://www.luchemos.org.ar/en/, including information on the Global Plan.
