In 1990, in Argentina there was no legislation against alcohol at the wheel. Traffic accidents followed one another, and many of them had to do with drivers whose further analyzes, many post mortem, showed they were highly intoxicated. However, traffic legislation didn’t establish a BAC limit for this extremely high-risk behavior.
Luchemos por la Vida carried out a survey on drivers about "Eating habits and driving" and, as a result, confirmed that 50% of people were driving vehicles after drinking alcohol. For this reason, the Association decided to raise consciousness of the dangers involving drinking and driving, through awareness campaigns, using posters, publications in graphic media, and advertising spots on TV and radio, and promoted legislation on this issue, specially establishing clear BAC limits.

This way, Luchemos promoted Decree Law No. 2.254/1992 that establishes in its article 46 the prohibition of driving "in a state of alcoholic intoxication or narcotic drugs". This was the starting point to the first blood alcohol limit (0.5 g/l) typified in the regulation of article 48 of the National Traffic Law. 24.449. Years later, different limits were established for motorcycle riders (0.2 g/l) and professionals (0 g/l).
On June 20th, Luchemos por la Vida turns 30 years old. Long time of intense and fruitful work, with important achievements. And frustrations too. Argentine road safety has evolved in this long time. But there is still a lot to do to accomplish the utopia of nobody dying in traffic. This is everyone's task.
Luchemos keeps fighting for life!
