In 1990, seatbelts were required inside vehicles, but their use was not mandatory. In those days almost nobody used them. The first survey carried out by Luchemos por la Vida showed that in Buenos Aires City only 0.3% of drivers were buckled up.
People felt confident inside the vehicle, not understanding that in a collision the force of inertia would cause them to be hit or ejected outside the vehicle with serious risk of death.
One of the first actions of Luchemos por la Vida was to promote its use across the country to save lives, through campaigns, posters and publications in graphic media, and awareness spots on TV and radio, to raise consciousness of its utility.
In addition, Luchemos por la Vida promoted a national law that would mandate their use in Argentina. First, it was the Decree No. 692/92, providing it. And it was the prelude to its inclusion in the new National Traffic Law No. 24,449 passed in 1994, which confirmed the mandatory usage.
On June 20th, Luchemos por la Vida will turn 30 years old. Long time of intense and fruitful work, with important achievements. And frustrations too.
Thank you! to those who have accompanied us on this path and to those who join us every day so that we can accomplish the utopia of nobody dying in traffic. There is still a lot to do and this is everyone's task.
Luchemos keeps fighting for life!
